Owl ringing and BTO rings

Donate Support Our Work Button 2Owl ringing provides important information that underpins conservation work for owls in the same way as for all other birds.

The bird ringing scheme in Britain is run by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO). Ringing is only carried out by trained, skilled ringers with the utmost consideration for the owls’ welfare. The BTO Ringing Scheme maintains very high standards of bird welfare and scientific data. A BTO ringing permit is a legal requirement for anyone ringing wild birds and has to be renewed annually. The vast majority of ringers are volunteers.

Records of great longevity show that ringing has no impact on the birds’ health, breeding or survival.
