Barn Owls are interested in openings and holes rather than buildings or boxes. A suitable entrance needs to be visible for a Barn Owl to explore potential nesting and roosting spaces.
- Tree holes can be perfect roost sites for Barn Owls.
- Large cavities may also be used for nesting.
- Gaps between bales can also make cosy roost places.
- Barns are potentially attractive . . .
- . . . particularly if access is easily visible . . .
- . . . from open countryside.
- Even small holes may be noticed, like this one.
- Or ventilation slots in traditional barns.
- The minimum size a Barn Owl can access is only 70mm x 70mm!
- Derelict buildings are just as attractive . . .
- . . . as long as there’s a dry place to roost . . .
- . . . that’s more than 10′ (3m.) above the ground
- Cavities within buildings are preferred.
- And suitable spaces may well be used for nesting.
- Eventually however derelict buildings can become unsuitable for Barn Owls . . .
- . . . because there isn’t anywhere dry enough to roost.
- Fortunately, holes can be made in almost any type of building, even modern ones!
