Your questions answered
What is a nestbox workshop?
Spend a day with experts from the Barn Owl Trust: Find out about Barn Owls and make your own nestbox to take home.
How does the day work?
There are slideshows and presentations in the morning and then after lunch everyone turns a tea chest into an indoor Barn Owl box using the materials provided. At workshops where teachests are not available (they are now in short supply) boxes will be built using new FSC approved timber.
The day is finished off with a visit to a local farm where participants watch two boxes being erected in farm buildings (modern and traditional) and learn where and how to erect their own.
What do I need to bring?
A packed lunch (unless we are providing one)
Warm clothes for the farm visit
*A tea chest if you have one (please let us know the dimensions of the open end before the event as we have to prepare the timber for you)
A hammer and a saw
*this is not required where boxes are built using new materials
How much does it cost?
The cost is based on two adults building one box and varies depending on materials used, (if teachests or all new wood) and if lunch and refreshments are included. Each event will have the cost and details listed. Any additional donation to the Barn Owl Trust would be most welcome
Can I bring my children?
Youngsters are welcome (no charge) but this event is not very suitable for under 7’s
How do I book ?
Contact Hannah at the Barn Owl Trust
Will BOT sales goods be there?
There will be a small selection - but if you'd like something specific from our website, call our office before the event to order and we can bring it along, and save you the postage.
Is there a workshop in my area ?
Most nestbox workshops are run in liaison with other Barn Owl or wild-life groups who find the venue and the farm in their area, track down tea chests and publicise the event locally.
The Barn Owl Trust provides the resources, staff, and materials and runs the day.
If you are part of a group that would like to arrange a nestbox workshop send us an email or call our conservation team for more details. Otherwise just keep an eye on our Events Diary or email us to let us know you are interested and we'll let you know when the next one is happening.
