Science Ideas

  • Think about how Barn Owls fit into the wider food chain. Draw a food chain. What other animals benefit from good Barn Owl habitat?
  • Carry out a field study. Go to the school field, local woods, common or heath land and mark out a square of land using tent pegs and string. Ask pupils to write down all the different types of wildlife and vegetation they can find within the marked out square. Think about the results in relation to biodiversity and compare with the science worksheet ‘Transect of Barn Owl habitat’
  • Find out about planting native hedgerow species (refer schools to Woodland Trust http://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/en/plant-your-own-wood/forest-creation/pages/how-we-can-help.aspx and http://www.wildseed.co.uk/page/sowing. And from the organic gardening magazine site http://www.wildlife-gardening.co.uk/OG12.htm Pupils can record success and growth rate of collected fruits and seeds of such species as hawthorn, wild rose, ash, birch, hazel, willow and beech. These can be planted in the school grounds or in a local spot (if agreed with the land owner).
  • Compare and contrast Barn Owl adaptations with another bird e.g. penguin, looking at reasons for adaptation like environment and food sources.
  • Compare and contrast with other animals such as mammal and reptile e.g. rabbit and grass snake).
The Barn Owl Trust is dedicated to conservation & education and does not operate a visitor centre.
