Be Inspired!
We hope that working with our educational materials will inspire you and the children you work with, and that it will encourage an increasing interest and an awareness of both Barn Owls and the countryside. Each pdf file is designed to be used independently, or alongside other materials to enrich a topic plan, taking the Barn Owl into each area of the curriculum. The educational materials provide excellent extension opportunities for those who have watched the Barn Owl Trust ’Wings of Change’ DVD or a Barn Owl Trust school visit. Further details of both are provided below and we suggest either option would greatly increase children’s understanding and enjoyment of the subject matter.

The education pages are designed for use with children at key stage 1 and 2. However, there are ideas and activities included that make some parts suitable resource material for older and younger children too. The materials can be photocopied for use in schools on the understanding they are copyright of the Barn Owl Trust. If you are using the materials independently of seeing the ‘Wings of Change’ DVD or a Barn Owl Trust school talk, then reading the ‘Wings of Change’ story is essential as your starting point for exploring this topic. If you have already seen the DVD or have had a Barn Owl Trust school visit, you may like to read the story in brief page as a refresher.

Good luck with your project, we hope you enjoy the ‘Wings of Change’

Barn Owl Trust School Visits
During a Barn Owl Trust school visit a blackboard and coloured chalks are used to tell the ‘Wings of Change’ story which can be adapted for children between the ages of 5 - 14 and special needs groups. The children will learn about landscape changes since the 1940’s, why these have happened and some of the effects on wildlife. They will also hear about owl pellets, BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) rings and things that can be done to safeguard wildlife in Britain. They will have ample opportunity to ask questions. Each visit is completed with the appearance of Baley, the Trust’s tame captive-bred Barn Owl. Baley is licensed for display by the Department of the Environment. Barn Owl pellets can be supplied, on request, for analysis after a visit. Please contact the Trust on 01364 653026 or email info@barnowltrust.org.uk for more details and to find out charges in your area.
